Search Engine Optimization Overview

Search engine optimization is the practice of designing a website (on page SEO) and obtaining links from relevant sites (off page SEO) so that a site is returned at or near the top of search engine results pages for relevant keywords or phrases.

It is highly beneficial for a site to be within the first two pages of a search results is the goal is to get referral traffic from the search engines. Pages that are in the 3rd or higher search engine results pages rarely see search engine referral traffic since most search engine users don’t go beyond the second page of search results. To get on the first or second results page for a competitive search term requires both solid on-page SEO and off-page SEO practices.

You will hear terms like Natural Search and Organic Search. These terms are related to Search Engine Optimization and refer to search results that are not paid placements. In other words, you don’t have to pay a fee each time a user clicks on your link in natural search results. That’s the advantage of search engine optimization over paid placements. The disadvantage is that search engine optimization is labor intensive and can take time to generate sustainable traffic.
